Speech Screening: A simple speech screener for initial sounds
What is a speech screener?
A speech screener is a basic assessment tool designed to flag areas of concern that may need intervention and/or further assessment.
- This activity is intended as a basic speech screening tool. It is designed to be simple in nature so it is suitable to be carried out by parents.
- This is not considered a diagnostic assessment and does not provide sufficient information for the diagnosis of speech sound disorders.
- This screener focuses on 20 sounds produced in initial word position – i.e. at the start of words.
- For example, the initial sound in the word ‘sun’ is /s/.
- This screener does not contain all consonant sounds used within English language. This screener does not include analysis of vowel sounds.
- The analysis of results provides a simplified analysis that classifies sounds into their general manner of production. It does not consider placement of sound production.
